Revitalizing Rural America In my first speech on the floor
of the U.S. Senate, I spoke about the possibilities and promise that America’s
small towns and rural communities offer for a country in need of clean,
renewable energy, a secure food supply and responsible stewardship of
our land and water. Unfortunately, for too long Washington has overlooked
the opportunities that Rural America can provide, leaving small towns
and rural communities across the country to wither on the vine. This week, I gave a speech on the floor of the United States Senate highlighting a few major pieces of this bill and how they help not just our farmers and rural communities, but also how they help protect our natural heritage, how they make us less dependent on foreign oil and how they make our food supply more secure. President Bush has said he will veto this bill. This, in my view, would be immoral, as it would only further this Administration’s policy of neglect towards our communities in rural America. I am extremely disappointed that President Bush has so quickly dismissed the farmers, ranchers and rural communities that form the bedrock of our Nation. I strongly urge the President to stop playing politics and reconsider his threat to veto this strong, smart and forward-looking farm bill. please take a few moments to tell me what
you have to say about the President’s threat to veto the 2007
Farm Bill.
The 2007 Farm Bill renews our commitment to the forgotten communities of Rural America, not only by lending a helping hand to our Nation’s hard-working farmers and ranchers in their time of need, but also by recognizing how the productivity and ingenuity of rural Americans can bolster our National efforts to protect the environment, lessen our dependence on foreign oil and make America’s food supply more secure. This bill plants the seeds for a new era of opportunity and prosperity in America, and I am proud to support it. Sincerely, Ken Salazar
