Investing in Colorado's, America's Priorities

Dear Friend:

This week, the United States Senate passed a Budget Resolution for fiscal year 2009 that breaks with the failed policies of the past, and sets forth a fiscally-responsible plan that lowers taxes, creates new jobs and gets our economy back on track.

In addition to providing short-term relief to stimulate our economy and tackle the growing housing crisis, we have also proposed meaningful long-term investments in clean energy projects; increased support for our troops on the field and veterans here at home; and added funding for Medicaid and other health care programs.

It is often said that a nation’s budget is an expression of its priorities. I am proud to say that the priorities we have set forth in this budget reflect those of the American people, and will help ensure that America is stronger, safer and more prosperous in the years that lie ahead.

Estate Tax Reform

In my view, it is clear that Congress must act promptly and thoughtfully to enact meaningful estate tax reform that will help Colorado’s family farmers, ranchers and small businesses.

As part of the budget, I introduced an amendment that will help bring permanent, comprehensive and fiscally-responsible reform to the current estate tax system. Although this amendment was utimtately not agreed to, I remain committed to enacting permanent estate tax reform that provides real relief to our family farmers, ranchers and small businesses

New Frontiers in Energy

At the end of this week, the Senate will adjourn for a two-week work period. During this period, I plan to travel throughout Colorado to meet with a number of business and community leaders who have spearheaded Colorado’s leadership in the new energy economy.

My regional meetings will culminate in my third annual energy summit, entitled New Frontiers in Energy Summit 2008, which will bring members of the business, scientific and government communities together to discuss Colorado’s future in the new energy economy.

I look forward to talking with you again soon.

Sincerely,

Ken Salazar
United States Senator
