Sen. Salazar Statement After Meeting With Harriet Miers

WASHINGTON, D.C. - United States Senator Ken Salazar today released this statement following his meeting with Ms. Harriet Miers, nominee for Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court:

“Ms. Miers and I discussed her personal and legal background.”

“As I have previously noted, I will also use the following criteria when considering Ms. Miers’ nomination or the nomination of any other judicial nominee:

  • Professional excellence as a lawyer or judge;
  • A demonstrated dedication that the person nominated will be a fair and impartial Justice; and
  • A demonstrated dedication to upholding the rule of law, avoiding a judicial activist on either the left or the right.”

“I have not made a decision yet as to Ms. Miers’ nomination. I await with great interest the information that will come forward in the Judiciary Committee’s hearings next month as they conduct a full, fair and proper review of her record. I will make my decision on her nomination only after that information is available and I have completed my own study. I will then perform my Constitutional duty in casting my vote.”
